Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs

Wisdom teeth are our third set of molars, and are usually our last set of teeth to come in. Typically, they come in during our late teenage years to our early twenties. They are located at the far end of your teeth set and are supposed to help to chew food for easy digestion. But most times, they come in too late and require immediate removal.

At Dallas Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we have collated some of the frequently asked questions about wisdom teeth removal for your insight.

Do I Need To Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

For some people, wisdom teeth help them complete their teeth set, and facilitates effective chewing. But for others, they come in when their teeth are already set and there is no adequate space for these wisdom teeth. When this happens, the wisdom teeth push the adjacent teeth out of their alignment, resulting in overcrowding. Our professionals will recommend immediate extraction so as to prevent the onset of pain and possible infection. Moreover, removing them will allow enough space in the mouth for your first and second set of molars to grow.

What Happens If I Do Not Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

The removal of wisdom teeth is usually a preventive measure. Neglecting the removal of wisdom teeth, especially when it is recommended, can lead to a series of problems. Since they do not have adequate room to erupt out of the gums, you might run the risk of infection. This infection sets in as the teeth are not visible enough for appropriate cleaning. Infections can lead to gum disease, and also affect the next molar teeth. Also, overcrowding happens as the teeth push against each other while trying to make space for themselves. This also results in crooked teeth and threatens your perfect smile.

How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

The removal of wisdom teeth depends on how they are erupting. When they break through the gums and are entirely visible, removing them is fairly easy. Our professionals will numb the area with local anesthesia and pull out the tooth traditionally. However, if the tooth has not completely sprouted from the gum, then a minimal surgical procedure is done. In this procedure, we will administer local anesthesia for comfort. Then, we gently make a small incision to show the tooth and extract it. Once extracted, the site will be cleaned and sutured.

How Long Does It Take To Recover After Removing Wisdom Teeth?

The removal might bring some swelling and soreness, and you will need to abstain from strenuous activities in the following days. Also, your diet will be mainly soft meals or liquid. Within the first five days, you should feel some normalcy return, and in a couple of weeks, you should be able to resume regular activities.

Realizing that you may have other questions or concerns about the procedure, our professionals are on hand to answer any questions you have. Please reach out to us at Dallas Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, by calling us at 972-733-0414 today to schedule a suitable consultation.
